National Merit honors are determined based on a student's performance on the PSAT. Each year, approximately 1.3 million high school students take the PSAT. Of those, 34,000 or 2.6% of students are named Commended Scholars, and 16,000 or 1.2% are chosen as National Merit Scholar Semifinalists.
