8th grade English students at West took their learning outside, combining writing and creativity in a fun, hands-on way. Each student selected an egg with a prompt to write a positive springtime message using a grammar skill from their recent unit and then brought their words to life with colorful sidewalk chalk.
A creative way to practice skills while spreading positivity around campus! #WilsonSD

Mrs. Hess's 8th Grade Gifted students at Southern took to the "seas" in a STEM project that required them to build a boat and rowing mechanism out of cardboard and duct tape! Students were collaborative problem solvers as they worked through the Engineering Design Process. They researched and brainstormed possible solutions, made scale drawings and scale models of their design, tested their prototype, and made improvements before building their full-scale model. Once the models were built, teams raced their boats across the pool, and one team was crowned the first ever Southern Cardboard Boat Regatta Champion! After the race, students reflected on the success of their design and highlighted areas where their design could have been improved.
Special thanks to Wilson Aquatics for making this learning experience possible for the students! #WilsonSD
