The Wilson School District is aware of a video circulating from a student-initiated walkout that occurred yesterday at the high school during instructional hours. We have received numerous emails and phone calls from community members sharing their perspectives on the video and the school district’s handling of the situation. Please note that the video was taken after the walkout had progressed for some time. It captures only a portion of the interaction between school staff and students.

We want to be clear: the District supports students’ rights to express their views. At the same time, we have a responsibility to maintain a safe, orderly, and supervised learning environment for all students.

The situation was particularly challenging because we had been informed that the demonstration would not take place. When students left classrooms and the building without permission, staff responded to ensure student safety and maintain order.

The administration carefully reviewed the situation, school district policies and procedures, and possible appropriate consequences. All actions taken were based solely on violations of the student handbook: leaving class or the building without permission, or insubordination when students did not return when directed. No disciplinary action was taken based on the expression of political views. The same standards would apply if a different group of students expressed a differing opinion on this or any other issue.

Longstanding legal guidance, including the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Tinker v. Des Moines, affirms that students do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” At the same time, the Court made clear that schools may take action when conduct materially disrupts the educational environment or compromises student safety, and that schools have a responsibility and a right to regulate the time, location, and manner of demonstrations in alignment with school rules and policies. Our response reflects this balance between protecting student expression and fulfilling our responsibility to maintain safe and effective school operations.

We recognize that emotions are high, and we value our students’ passion and engagement. We remain committed to supporting our students and maintaining a safe, respectful school environment for everyone.

Dr. Chris Trickett, Superintendent
