Mission Statement
The mission of the Wilson School District Art Department is to ensure that all students at every developmental level experience creative, academic, and social growth through the visual arts.
Art Department Philosophy
Art is a human endeavor that reveals all that we have learned about life, culture, technology, and ourselves. Through art, we come to perceive and understand our world. Art education allows us to teach our children the importance, purposes, and possibilities of art.
The art education program is designed to help students connect with the enduring ideas about art and the human experience. People have made art throughout time allowing civilizations to identify with their culture, understand their experiences, expressing their own thoughts and feelings, solving problems and find creative solutions. We aim to provide students with an appreciation of the art that has been made before us, the contextual situations that impact art production in the past and present, and the multitude of reasons that people across the globe and through time have communicated visually through art.
The goals of art education in the Wilson School District are to assist each student to:
Enduring Ideas and Art
- Recognize the enduring ideas that connect art and the human experience.
- Realize that art occurs when people process personal experiences in a visual way.
- Ask essential questions about the purposes of art and art making.
Cultural and Historical Awareness
- Explore other cultures through art and artifacts.
- Recognize the impact of styles, movements, and individual artists on the history of art.
- Realize that art is a product of culture and society.
- Interpret the visual images of contemporary culture.
- Express personal reactions, thoughts and feelings to daily experiences.
Creativity
- Utilize art to solve problems in a visual way.
- Build problem-solving skills through art making
- Find and test creative solutions to problems.
Appreciation
- Recognize that art is a form of communication.
- Realize that the communication through art enriches the lives of the artist and the
audience.
Skill Building
- Develop a variety of art-making skills
