Recently our board had a first reading of a proposed Equity Policy for the Wilson School District. After that first reading, the board requested more time to review the policy and consider revisions. Since that time, we have received a lot of feedback about the policy and its implications across the district. In an effort to engage our community in a productive discussion and to capture this feedback in a collaborative way, we are now offering an opportunity for interested parties to engage in a table top discussion about the policy. We are looking to include students, staff and parents, along with our board and administration in this workshop, with a goal of producing a revised policy draft for board consideration. Applications for this workshop are now closed.
The equity workshop is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 28 at 6 pm. We received over 50 applications from parents in the Wilson School District to participate in this workshop. Next week, our board will review those applications (with the names of the applicants redacted) and choose a group of parents who represent different perspectives on the topic. The process the board will be using to determine the representatives will include reviewing all of the responses to the questions, and ensuring representation from across all parts of the district. Board members will score the applicants independently, and the top 12-15 point recipients will be invited to participate in the workshop. Those individuals who are selected will be notified by Friday, September 17.
In addition, our admin team has requested applications from students and staff for this workshop. Our team will be choosing those individuals, using the same methodology, to provide for a balanced approach to the conversation. We look forward to using the outcomes of this workshop to inform the next steps in the process of our equity work here at the Wilson School District.
