On Thursday, April 14, the Wilson School District lost a beloved member of our team. Miss Jen Sarnes, a 6th grade reading teacher at Wilson Southern Middle School, tragically passed away. Ms. Sarnes was a veteran teacher who was extremely well respected by our staff and adored by her students. Our district and community is in shock from this news and it will take some time to process.
We have worked throughout the break to develop a plan to support our students and staff at Southern Middle School when they return to school. On Tuesday, April 19th ONLY Wilson Southern Middle School will operate on a 2-hour delay schedule. This delay will give our staff, counselors, and administrative team time to meet as a team and finalize plans and support structures for the day to bring the students in and care for them throughout the day.
Southern students that ride the bus, get dropped off, or walk to school will follow the same 2-hour delay schedule that is in place for inclement weather. Doors to Southern Middle School will open at 9:30 am, with classes beginning at 9:55 am. If families have a hardship getting students to school for the delay, the auditorium and cafeteria will be open and monitored by district staff for students that need to get dropped off at the normal start time. This is for emergency situations only.
Again, Wilson Southern Middle School will operate on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, April 19. This delay IS ONLY for Southern Middle School students. All other schools in the Wilson School District will operate on their typical schedule.
Please continue to keep Miss Sarnes’ family and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time.
