Dear Wilson Community,
We are thrilled to announce the first-ever Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service. MLK Day is a professional learning day for our staff, meaning students are not scheduled to be in school on Monday, January 20. However, this year, we are taking the afternoon to engage in several community service projects. And we are not just inviting but counting on our students to join our staff in helping to make a significant difference!
The Wilson School District is proud to partner with the Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading (YVC) for a day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20, 2025. YVC, a national organization dedicated to youth-driven service, is hosted locally by VOiCEup Berks (www.voiceupberks.org), and we are fortunate to have their support in empowering our students and staff to make a difference.
In preparation for MLK Day, YVC staff visited each school building to educate our students on the importance of service learning and giving back to their community. Following these sessions, students were invited to choose the project focus area for their school, ensuring that each initiative reflects their interests and passions.
Because this isn’t a scheduled school day, we would like to know if your student(s) will be participating so we can adequately prepare. Please complete this FORM no later than Wednesday, January 8. (NOTE: once you complete the form, you will receive additional information regarding the project happening at your child’s building).
Participating students would need to arrive at their school building at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 20. They would be picked up at 3:00 pm.
We look forward to our students participating alongside our staff in meaningful projects and gaining the tools and confidence to make a lasting impact. We are excited to witness the difference they will make on January 20, 2025, and beyond!
Sincerely,
Dr. Chris Trickett, Superintendent
Important Notes:
-
Transportation to and from the school for the MLK Day of Service is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.
-
Any student ages 11-18 can earn volunteer hours through YVC by completing the YVC waiver here.
-
This afternoon of service is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL. There is no expectation that students participate, and students MUST RSVP ahead of time so we can plan appropriately for supervision of the activities.
-
All students will receive the opportunity to have a take-home project, so even if they are unable to attend on January 20, they can still make an impact on our community!
