- Attitudes The Envirothon Program will help students develop a set of attitudes and feelings of concern for the environment and instill the motivation and commitment to participate in activities geared toward protecting the environment.
- Application The Envirothon Program will help students develop skills needed to identify, investigate and contribute to the resolution of environmental issues and problems.
Archery
- Contact: Mr. Galan galjav@wilsonsd.org
-
Target archery is a discipline thriving on consistency and focus rather than strength and agility which makes it a sport anyone can enjoy.
We look forward to introducing our club members to the fundamentals of archery techniques and equipment, and coaching them to improve their skills.
The club will follow NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) guidelines to educate students on how to properly shoot a compound bow. The NASP system employs several procedures which foster a safe and orderly structure for youth to learn and practice archery in a school class or club setting.
Outdoor Club
- Contact: Mr. Galan/ Mrs. Fox
-
This year we have merged a few school interest into one club. Outdoor club takes place during school. Our club involves a variety of interest including: teaching the fundamentals of fly fishing, fly tying, archery and caring/ raising for brook trout and mallard ducks and then releasing them when they reach maturity. We teach students the parts of a fly rod, cast a fly rod and how to tie a fly that imitates an insect on the stream. Students practice using the 12 fly rods and 12 fly tying kits we have at school. We receive about 900 brook trout eggs from PA Fish and Boat Commission at the beginning of November and release about 250 fingerlings at the middle of April. The program is called Trout in the Classroom and takes place in many school across the state. Hopefully, we can yield a larger number of trout this year. Our goal is always to beat our live fish total from the previous year. Our mallard program is fairly new. We started this program in the spring of 2017. We will raise two broods a year (Fall and Spring) ranging from 10 to 12 hatched birds. Just like the eggs, they are shipped through the mail using 2 day delivery. Our ducks will stay with us for about three months until they reach maturity. Our ducks live in the courtyard in their duck mansion. Our Technology Education class at West built a 4 by 6 by 5 foot duck house with a barn door in the front of it. The ducks use this to go in and out of the house throughout the day. Then our club members maintain and care for the ducks throughout their time here at West before they are release at our pond behind the school.Through these interests, we are able to provide another experience(s) for our students to take part in while expanding their current working knowledge with these areas of interest.
