My name is Susan Showalter and I teach first grade at Spring Ridge Elementary.
After four years in the banking industry, I began my teaching career in 1983 as a preschool teacher at Lincoln Park Nursery School. I taught three and four-year-olds for 12 years until making the move to Wilson as a Kindergarten teacher at Sinking Spring Elementary in 1995. I also served as a Language Arts Assistant in first grade at Spring Ridge Elementary during my two years as a Kindergarten teacher. In 1997 I began teaching first grade at Spring Ridge Elementary and am convinced that this is where I belong – in the most rewarding grade I could choose to teach!!
My teaching philosophy includes the belief that “the whole child” must be considered when teaching. The cognitive, social, emotional, and physical aspects of the child all contribute to his/her learning style. Children learn in different ways and should be given opportunities to absorb material through varied activities. I believe that one of the greatest rewards a teacher can experience is when a child realizes his/her ability to succeed and demonstrates this ability, no matter how small a task it may be!
