Dear Wilson Community,
We know that there is an increased level of concern regarding the spread of the coronavirus and how it will impact the Wilson School District. Our District Leadership continues to work with local, state, and federal agencies to educate ourselves on how to approach this ever-changing issue. We are evaluating many avenues to ensure the continued education of our students as well as ways to maintain the safety of both students, employees, and community members.
While as of the writing of this communication, there have been no confirmed cases in the Wilson School District or Berks County, we are working proactively to prepare for our students to receive flexible instruction from home in the event of a long-term school closure.
Therefore, there will be no school for students or staff in the Wilson School District, tomorrow, Friday, March 13 so that we can perform a deep cleaning of all our buildings and facilities. Starting Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20 there will no school for students. This will provide our teaching staff with the opportunity to develop appropriate grade-level learning experiences and activities for our students in the event that we need to close school beyond next Friday. During this time, ALL school activities are cancelled, including all transportation, athletic competitions/practices, and extracurricular activities. Please note that the Beauty and the Beast Musical scheduled for tonight through Saturday has been postponed.
As a reminder, according to the Center for Disease Control, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus, which is referred to as social distancing. CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
Please know that we are receiving our guidance from Governor Wolf’s Office, the Secretary of Education, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Berks County Department of Emergency Services and will continue to share all updates with our staff, families and the community through district communication channels, including our website, email and call-home messages. Please visit this link on our website for the most up-to-date information.
The safety and security of our students, staff and the community are our top priorities. We know that this decision causes difficulties for our families, however, we need to work together as the Wilson community to do all we can to stop the spread of this virus.
Thank you for your continued support as we work through this complex and ever-evolving situation. We will keep you apprised as additional information becomes available.
Dr. Richard Faidley, Superintendent
