    HIGH SCHOOL COURSE OFFERINGS


    READING STRATEGIES 9

     

    Prerequisite: None

     

    Credits: 1.0

     

    Length: Full Year

     

    Grade Level:  9
     
    Reading Strategies 9 meets one period a day for the entire year. This course is designed for 9th grade students who demonstrate the need to increase their reading comprehension and vocabulary. Reading materials will consist of content area texts, contemporary novels, and other genres of literature.  The course highlights independent reading of student-selected novels, responding to literature through discussion and writing, content area strategy instruction, and extending critical reading skills. Students will develop skills and strategies at their instructional reading level and then work to "push these skills out" into their content area classes. Students will be placed in this class based upon results of the PSSA scores, GRADE assessments, and teacher recommendations.

    MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE OFFERINGS


    READING WORKSHOP 6

    Grade Level:  6
     
    Reading Workshop 6 is a required course designed to enhance reading and writing skills.  This workshop encompasses essential elements that impact adolescent achievement including class novels, self-selection of reading material, written responses to both fiction and non fiction texts, focused strategy instruction, and PSSA test preparation.  This workshop is designed to address the needs of all students, and will complement the English 6 required course.

    Reading Reading Workshop 7 is designed for all 7th grade students to increase their reading proficiency through participation in reading workshop activities.  Three essential components that impact adolescent reading achievement include time to read, self-selection of reading material, and written responses to the text read.  Extensive reading is encouraged, along with dialogue journals in response to the material read.  PSSA test preparation is also an important component in this course that addresses specific literacy needs of all students.  Students will analyze literature from a variety of genres, while strengthening their comprehension skills.

    READING/WRITING WORKSHOP 8

    Grade Level: 8
     
    Reading/Writing Workshop 8 is a course designed to enhance reading and writing skills. This course encompasses: focused strategy instruction in both fiction and nonfiction, as well as written response to literature.  Within a writing workshop format, students will develop informative and argumentative writing skills.  Students will participate in PSSA test preparation. This course will be required for students who demonstrate specific literacy needs in the areas of comprehension and writing.
